Thank you for visiting the SPLENDA (R) No Calorie Sweetener website. We hope you became more familiar with SPLENDA (R) No Calorie Sweetener during your visit to the site.
SPLENDA (R) Brand Sweetener is safe for everyone and has no side-effects. Studies show that it has no effect on the gastrointestinal system, does not accumulate in the body, and is excreted rapidly. SPLENDA Brand Sweetener is not associated in any way to fat substitutes and, therefore, does not cause diarrhea or any other GI distress.
SPLENDA (R) No Calorie Sweetener is the brand name of the ingredient known as sucralose. Sucralose is a sweetening ingredient that is made from sugar (sucrose) by a patented process. Three atoms of hydrogen on the sugar molecule are replaced with 3 atoms of chlorine. Your body does not recognize it as sugar or a source of carbohydrates. The sucralose molecule is very stable, thus it is not broken down in the body. Sucralose is so sweet (about 600 times sweeter than sugar) that to replace one teaspoon of sugar, you would need only one six hundredth of a teaspoon of sucralose. Therefore, a few ingredients which provide bulk, are added to sucralose to make its packet and granular forms. These ingredients (maltodextrin and dextrose) are common safe food ingredients that complement the sweet taste of sucralose. These added ingredients are commonly used in foods, and in combination with other low-calorie sweeteners. Both are corn derivatives.
Sucralose or SPLENDA Brand Sweetener, is not used for energy by the
body. The majority of sucralose consumed is also unabsorbed and is
excreted
unchanged.

The safety of sucralose is documented by one of the most extensive and thorough safety testing programs ever conducted on a new food additive. More than 100 studies conducted and evaluated over a 20-year period clearly demonstrate the safety of sucralose. Studies were conducted in a broad range of areas to assess whether there were any safety risks regarding cancer, genetic effects, reproduction and fertility, birth defects, immunology, the central nervous system, and metabolism. These studies clearly indicate that sucralose:

The GI upset that some people experience is caused by Sugar
Alcohols. Sugar Alcohols can cause a laxative effect. A

Polyols - Sugar Alcohols
Do they cause gastrointestinal problems?
For the vast majority of consumers, these sweeteners do
not cause a problem. In some people,
excessive consumption may cause gastrointestinal symptoms, such as gas
or laxative effects, similar to reactions to beans and certain
high-fiber foods. Such symptoms depend on an individual's
sensitivity and the other foods eaten at the same time.
